Culling History

These history pages provide a background to Deer Culling in New Zealand, commencing with the first operations undertaken initially by the Department of Internal Affairs beginning in the 1930's and later by the NZ Forest Service from 1956 until 1956 and currenly by the Department of Conservation.

A legacy of the government culling operations is the vast network of backcountry huts, tracks and foot bridges. A total of 750 huts were built and 100's of kilometers of track formed, and this achievement is unequalled anywhere in the world.

Keep checking these pages for new information that will be progressively added to the website.
